In order to launch a website you need a domain name.
When you buy it just keep in mind that the one time payment you make does not result in the domain name ownership for the rest of your life. You own it during the paid period. If you pay for one year, you own the domain name for one year only. So don’t forget to pay in advance before the period expiries. Otherwise, you may lose it.
Step 1: Choose the company from which you want to buy a domain name (for example, Godaddy).
Step 2: Check if the domain name you want is available for sale. Keep trying until you find an available one.
Step 3: Buy it.
Some companies (like Godaddy) offer free domain names for a one year period if you choose them as your web host.
But no one limits you: you can buy a domain name from one company and choose a different web host later.
To run WordPress with the theme your web host needs to meet the following technical requirements:
- PHP version 5.4 or greater
- MySQL version 5.0 or greater (recommended: MySQL 5.5 or greater)
- The mod_rewrite Apache module
There are many hosts that meet the requirements. Just email your potential host and ask if their hosting is compatible with WordPress. Don’t rush for the cheapest offer. We recommend you to read reviews first in order to choose the right web host.
If this is your first website, Godaddy is more than enough. But if you’re an experienced WordPress user/developer we strongly recommend you to choose DigitalOcean which offers fantastic cloud hosting. Just click here to get your $10 bonus after the first payment.
Almost all web hosts provide one click setup for WordPress. And WordPress has a very intuitive administration panel from which you can upload your theme and plugins. However, sometimes you need to have direct access to the folders where your WordPress, themes and plugins are stored.
For that you need an FTP client. We recommend you to use FileZilla.
Just download it from the official website, install and configure using the instructions provided by your web host.
